After the success of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) extension project to the the newly paved Laguna Lake Highway in Taguig by additional 1.3 kilometres, the first highway in the Philippines that Duterte Administration opened, and the grand opening of the Cagayan de Oro Coastal Road which is said to be 20 years in the making, since 1997, this time, the DPWH proposed a new project that links Mindoro Island to the Province of Batangas through a world-class super bridge called “Batangas-Mindoro Bridge”.

The gigantic bridge will have pedestrian and bicycle lanes and can withstand typhoons with winds up to 350 km/h (220 mph). It is said to be the South East Asia first floating bridge with high ship passage on its pontoons.

The current position of the Mindoro Island is a perfect spot as “Luzon’s Gateway to the South” to the Island Provinces of Visayas and Mindanao Region by opening roads along the Nautical Highway for a faster and more efficient transport of goods and people. It can also help agriculture and ecotourism grow and a great opportunity for expansion and optimization of basic industries or utilities like water, power, oil, and telecommunication companies.

In relation to the implementation under PPP mode for the Construction, Operation, and Maintenance of the Mindoro-Batangas Nautical Bridge Highway connecting Mindoro Island to Batangas City, Congressman Reynaldo V. Umali proposed a House Bill # 2767 on August 9, 2017.
